If you are looking for classic (some might say stereotypical) South American ambience, Coquimbo's pier will not disappoint you.  Matronly ladies beckon you loudly to their restaurants, mustachioed men whisper offers of "guaranteed legitimate" DVDs for five dollars and young lovers kiss with abandon; all the while this band serenades the revelers with brassy arrangements of Latin standards.  The distance to La Serena's mall is only a few miles, but it seems worlds away.
